What is Comprehensive Cancer
Control?
Comprehensive Cancer Control is broadly defined as "a coordinated
approach to reduce the incidence, morbidity and mortality of cancer
through prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation and
palliation."
The Montana Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (MCCCP)
is a supporting partner to the Montana Cancer Control Coalition (MTCCC).
The MTCCC is a statewide coalition of health advocates with the common
mission to reduce the overall burden of cancer for Montanans. Working
together, the MTCCC developed Montana's Comprehensive Cancer Control
Plan.

Program Description
The Montana Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes
Prevention Program is a new program aimed at preventing type 2
diabetes and cardiovascular disease among residents who are at high
risk. This project is coordinated by the Montana Department of Public
Health and Human Services with funds allocated by the 2007 State
Legislature. The Montana Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes
Prevention Program is modeled after the National Diabetes Prevention
Program (DPP) and also includes a tobacco cessation component.
The DPP was a highly successful randomized
controlled clinical trial that tested the efficacy of an intensive
lifestyle intervention to prevent or delay development of type 2
diabetes. The three treatment arms compared were intensive lifestyle
intervention, the prescription drug metformin and a placebo. In the
DPP, lifestyle intervention participants attended a 16 session core
curriculum focusing on diet, exercise and behavior change while
working towards the goals of 7% weight loss and 150 minutes/week of
physical activity. Participants taking part in the DPP lifestyle
intervention were able to reduce the incidence of diabetes by 58%.
The goal of the program is to implement 4 pilot
translation programs that utilize the successful methods of the DPP
lifestyle intervention curriculum to reduce the incidence of
cardiovascular disease and diabetes among persons at high risk within
the state of Montana. Because of the success found with the initial
sites, 4 additional prevention sites were added in January 2009.
Currently, the original sites are wrapping up the
second round of the 16 week core curriculum and starting more core
groups, finishing their first 6 month after core sessions and
preparing their second groups for the 6 months of follow-up. The new
sites are enrolling participants and will have their first core groups
starting in February 2009.
